Medical Mycology course at Woods Hole

The deadline for application to the Medical Mycology course held in the summer at Woods Hole is April 1st. This is a great hands-on course for practical laboratory techniques with medically relevant fungi.  I am including an email from the course directors below.

We are writing to encourage students, post-doctoral fellows, medical fellows, and junior faculty to apply for the 2009 molecular mycology course at Woods Hole.  The course accepts 18 students and has four teaching assistants each year. The long-term course directors are Aaron Mitchell and Jack Edwards.  The instructors in residence include Scott Filler, Judy Rhodes, Joe Heitman, Terry Mylonakis, Jamie Konopka, Andre Nantel, and Ted White.

The experiments focus on Candida albicans, Cryptococcus neoformans, and Aspergillus fumigatus, and include transformations, genetic crosses, and virulence experiments.  We are especially pleased that Andre Nantel will be returning to the course this year for a hands on tutorial with respect to microarray experiments conducted at the course, and microarray experimental design and interpretation.  A great strength of the course is an informal discussion series with the course leaders, as well as a series of invited lecturers/instructors who visit the course and present lectures.

This year marks the thirteenth year of the course, and we hope it will continue with the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, NIAID, the HHMI, and industrial support (especially from Merck, Pfizer, and New England Biolabs) for many years to come.

For further information, there is a direct website link at: http://www.mbl.edu/education/courses/special_topics/momy.html

Importantly, there is scholarship support for applicants. The course runs from August 5-21, 2009 and the deadline for applications is April 1, 2009. For your information, we have appended below the list of invited lecturers, directors, and instructors for the course.  For applicants that have applied in previous years, we ask that you draw this to attention in reapplying for the course, as this is given special consideration.

We would be happy to discuss the course further with anyone who is interested.

Best wishes,

Aaron Mitchell
Jack Edwards
Scott Filler
Joe Heitman
Judy Rhodes
Ted White

  1. I agree- this is a great course. I enjoyed it a lot, and met great people. Well worth the effort. Nice to see the alumni teaching courses 😉 maybe someday for me!

  2. Former TA and instructor…the course rocks, my students have been and have nothing but good things to say. In my modest opinion, I would argue the connections are by far the best part of that course (the classes are pretty good too).
