An Inky-cap mushroom genome

Francis Martin has written up a delightful summary pointing to our publication of the genome of Coprinopsis cinereus which appears in the early edition of PNAS and will grace the cover at the end of the month.  I encourage you to take a look at Francis’s post and the paper, available as Open Access from PNAS.  I’ll do my best to post a summary of the paper when I get a free moment.

  1. I think this is an excellent model organism for study in a middle or HS science setting. Maybe even homeschool if the parents are adequately trained. What do you think?

  2. Phil – quite possibly. Some friends did use it for an elementary school class. Need a basic way to keep them in complete dark (we have used wooden boxes or incubators) and then a simple light timer so you can put them on 12:12 or 18:6 cycles. Pat has developed some modules for teaching so it might be possible to streamlines these for HS science setting to look at meiosis and development. I presume the typical onion cells are usually easier for the staining and microscopy but be cool to see this system in a HS setting too.

    It takes a couple of weeks from mating to mushroom formation so they have to be patient and the biggest challenge is probably making sterile media and keeping it from drying out too fast.
