In followup to the Aspergillus RIP paper discussion, Jo Anne posted in the comments that her paper published in FGB about RIP in another asexual species of fungi also found that evidence for the meiosis-specific process of Repeat Induced Point-mutations (RIP).
David Carter at the Sanger Centre emailed a message that new assemblies of Saccharomyces strain resequencing project have been posted including a new three-way alignment of S. bayanus–S.paradoxus–S.cerevisiae. This updates the Dec 2007 release.
Cliff Zeyl and Sally Otto present a nice review on research from the Kruglyak lab regarding evidence that Saccharomyces is primarily a selfer in nature as it outbreeds very infrequently (once in 50,000 generations). The implications of this work has relevance on the importance of sexual reproduction and recombination in natural populations.
