Department Head in Microbiology at the University of Georgia

UGA MicrobiologyThe Department of Microbiology at the University of Georgia is recruiting an outstanding researcher and academic leader for a tenured faculty position as Professor and Head in Fall 2019. We seek a creative and dynamic individual who will lead us into the future as one of the nation’s premier microbiology departments, recognized for innovative and outstanding teaching and research programs and vigorous community involvement. Candidates with research interests that expand or complement existing departmental strengths are particularly encouraged, but all outstanding applicants will be carefully considered. Applicants must have a Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in Microbiology or a related field, a well-funded research program, a scholarship record consistent with appointment as a tenured full professor, and demonstrated potential for leadership. In addition to leadership, the successful candidate will be expected to continue a strong extramurally funded research program and contribute to teaching in the Department. A competitive salary and ample resources will be provided.

The Department is housed in the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences and has established strengths in research areas that are unified by their focus on understanding and/or applying the fundamental biology of microorganisms (see http://mib.uga.edu/). The Department administers a vigorous graduate training program, currently with 73 Ph.D. students, and has an important role in undergraduate education in microbiology across campus. The candidate is expected to have a strong commitment to enhancing excellence in both undergraduate teaching and graduate training. Our Department provides a link among numerous centers of excellence on campus that share a common association with fundamental research in microbes including the Center for Vaccines and Immunology, the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, and the Center for Topical and Emerging Global Diseases. Our 18 full- time tenure-track faculty are joined by 22 faculty affiliates from diverse departments, making for a rich community of microbiologists on campus.

The University of Georgia is a research-intensive land-grant university located in Athens-Clarke County with strong research facilities in mass spectrometry, NMR, crystallography, fermentation, microscopy, bioinformatics and cell biology. Athens lies in the northern Piedmont region of Georgia an hour-plus drive from Atlanta and its spectrum of cultural and mercantile resources, less than 2 hours from the Chattahoochee National Forest and southern Appalachian mountains, and within easy driving distance of the Atlantic coast. Athens is home to a thriving arts and music community and prides itself on its classical history and cultural diversity (http://www.visitathensga.com).
